NCKU Awarded Academician Michael M. C. Lai Honorary Professor

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan, has awarded Academician Michael Ming-Chiao Lai as Honorary Professor recently, as NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung personally presented the certificate to Academician Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, a world-renowned molecular virologist.

President Hwung-Hweng Hwung praised the academic achievements of Academician Michael Ming-Chiao Lai and especially his dedication to NCKU and the medical research in Taiwan as well, at the ceremony hosted by NCKU, Dec. 26th, 2012.

Academician Lai, the former NCKU President, currently serves as Distinguished Research Fellow of Institute of Molecular Biology at Academia Sinica, Distinguished Chair Professor of NCKU and the Principal Investigator of Medical Device Innovation Center at NCKU.

In November, Academician Lai was awarded a special honor from NCKU, the Kwoh-Ting Li Lecture Award, sponsored by the chairman of Delta Electronics, Mr. Bruce Cheng, in recognition of Dr. Lai’s outstanding contribution in the virus research, and to improve human well-being.

Dr. Lai has been regarded as a pioneer and a leading investigator in the coronavirus and hepatitis delta virus (HDV) research in the world, having made numerous seminal contributions to the understanding of the molecular biology and pathogenesis of the coronavirus, which causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) among other diseases, and is an author of many textbook chapters on coronavirus.

In his 30-plus years of academic career, Dr. Lai has established himself as a foremost virologist on the international stage, excelling in three different disparate and medically important viruses, including coronavirus, HDV and hepatitis C virus (HCV).

Dr. Lai has been recognized by many awards and prominent standings in professional societies. He was elected to the membership of Academia Sinica, American Academy of Microbiology and The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, appointed as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and has served on the editorial boards of many other scientific journals.
