‘Life of Pi’ hot topic at NCKU art & tech forum
Tainan, Taiwan, Dec. 5, 2012
Experts and scholars from art departments of universities in southern Taiwan gathered at National Cheng Kung University on Nov. 3 to exchange views on the latest trends of art and technology in a forum where they referred to “Life of Pi,” currently one of the hottest films worldwide.
The movie of Oscar-winning director Ang Lee of Taiwan has demonstrated the best combination between technology and art, using digital animation to express and portray the magic and wonders of the ocean scenery, said former NCKU President Cheng-I Weng at the 2nd Taiwan Southern Region Universities Technology and Art Forum, which was hosted by the NCKU Institute of Art Studies (IOAS).
NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung said that art is an important part of our daily life as our lives and our society are in dire need of the influence of art. If both technology and art can combine and communicate with each other, it will definitely help the research and development of both fields, he added.
Both art and technology pursue innovation. Art pursues uniqueness and distinctiveness whereas technology stands on the shoulders of giants, accumulating achievements from the past and continuing to undergo research, according to Weng.
He said, though both art and technology have different characteristics, if both of them combine, they would become just like what has been shown in the movie “Life of Pi” -- bringing artistic performance to the highest level.
The movement of the Bengal tiger and its enlivened fur and beard were the product of technology and the imaginary night scene of the ocean and the colors of sunset in the film were also the effects of post-production work, according to Weng, adding that the magic lies in the combination of art and technology.
The purpose of the forum was to promote interdisciplinary academic research among art departments of universities in southern Taiwan, said NCKU Vice President Hong-Sen Yan, and the theme of this year’s forum focused on three directions, namely, “Media,” “Space” and “Collection.”
This forum gathered all universities in the southern region, including scholars from different departments in NCKU, and experts from Tainan National University of the Arts.
NCKU IOAS Director Fang-Huai Chu revealed that in 2011, universities in the southern part of Taiwan established a strategic alliance among art departments to promote interdisciplinary academic research.
She added, the forum also took the opportunity to inspect the position of humanities and recall the history of traditional art. The interaction with technology has not only provided revolutionary ideas to art, but also enabled art to change with time, thus giving art a different kind of life and demonstrating the beauty of arts.
