NCKU hosts 2012 International Symposium on Energy Technology and Strategy to promote bioenergy
The second International Symposium on Energy Technology and Strategy was hosted by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Tainan, at Yun-Suan Sun Green Building Research Center, Tainan, Nov. 23-24.
Nearly 100 international researchers in energy technology and strategy attended the conference to share the most recent advances in biomass with a purpose to promote alternative energy.
“The importance of energy technology is rapidly gaining momentum in the context of ongoing discussions on climate change and energy security, “said NCKU Vice President Chih-Chin Ho at the opening ceremony.
He said that as the hosts of 2012 International Symposium on Energy Technology and Strategy, NCKU and the Research Centre for Energy Technology and Strategy (RCETS) are honored to have an opportunity to continue the conference’s great tradition of bringing world-wide scientists, researchers and engineers together to share their innovations and ideas regarding the field.
With the rapidly growing population, the increasing demands for food, water and energy have generated new challenges which need to be addressed in right perspective to enhance the quality of our life and environment, according to VP Ho.
He also said, it is essential to intensify the efforts to make available abundant supplies of cheaper and cleaner energy.
“Promoting efficient and sustainable energy is not only for academic research or economic development, but for sustaining human life on earth, “according to Ho.
Dr. Wen-Teng Wu, director of RCETS indicated that this symposium initiated by RCETS, NCKU aims to promote the exchange of recent and advanced information in the wider field of biomass with special focus on fundamental research, technology, applications, as well as policy and strategy.
“As the local hosts to this symposium, we strive to provide an equally outstanding environment for conversation and debate among the participants,” according to Wu.
The symposium is centered on 4 main themes – Bioenergy in Policy, Production & Utilization of Biofuel, Biofuel from Algae, and Report of MU-NCKU Cooperative Project – with 2 keynote speeches on “critical barriers to sustainable bioenergy development” by Seth Snyder from Argonne National Laboratory and “renewable energy technologies-IPCC and beyond” by Andre Faaij from Utrecht University, respectively.
