IIMBA students take center stage on NCKU anniversary day
International students sported their traditional dresses and national flags, showing off a great variety of costumes and demonstrating a spirit of cooperation and sportsmanship during the Nov. 11 celebrations of the 81st anniversary of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan.
The anniversary celebrations kicked off at 8:30 in the morning with an Olympic Parade performed by international students from the Institute of International Management (IIMBA), followed by the parade and track and field events.
The relay event consisted of 28 runners, 16 gentlemen and 12 ladies. Each runner ran a 100-meter dash, consisting of a total of 2,800 meters. The relay team was led by Danel Fostin, who also serves on the student council for IIMBA.
Fostin said, “The relay was a success. I was very satisfied with the performance of all of the participants.” He carefully coordinated the event with fellow student councilman, Jonathan Moore. The two held evening practices with the competitors during the buildup for the race.
Moore expressed his gratitude for everybody’s effort and dedication. “It really shows the unity that students have in the IIMBA department. We are a distinct group compared to the rest of the NCKU community, and today we really demonstrated our enthusiasm in the parade and the race, ” he added.
Then the students showed off their famous 1,000 person aerobics and cheerleading performance. Other events included basketball, table tennis, and badminton tournaments. NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung attended some of the tournaments.
Hwung expressed his delight at the turnout, saying that the students need this occasion to take their mind off of their research and academic studies.
On NCKU’s 81st anniversary, the international community also brought their share to the event.
A representative from Burkina Faso participated in the oath taking ceremony on behalf of the Department of Resource Engineering.
NCKU IIMBA as the largest IMBA program in Taiwan with 181 international students from over 36 countries is designed to develop and sharpen the students’ business knowledge and skills in a global environment, according to Jeh-Nan Pan, Vice Dean and Director of IIMBA, who noted that the interaction between diverse groups of individuals is expected to bring a unique learning experience to the students.
The IIMBA Department at NCKU brings a remarkable group of scholars into the Tainan community every year. Studying international relations at the business level, many of them participate in it as well. “It seems to me that NCKU and the international community have a deep bond together,” according to IIMBA student Jonathan Manson.
After the athletic events, other festivities were held around the Kuang Fu campus. Rows of tents were set up that spanned from Yuping Building to the main gate. Various departments and students associations promoted various games and snack foods.
IIMBA Student Council member Ming Ying Chao said, “This ceremony has been a lot of fun, but the weather was quite hot. It gave us a chance to meet more students and let people know other students from other departments.”
