National Cheng Kung University Department of Nursing and the Asian and Pacific Alliance for Nursing Education held an online forum to foster international communication in the Asian-Pacific nursing academia and to discuss the changes and challenges nursing education faces in the post-pandemic era. Faculty and students from Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Australia, The United Kingdom, Turkey, Mongolia, and Pakistan participated in the forum to share their teaching experiences and strategies during the pandemic.

Yan-Shen Shan, Dean of the NCKU College of Medicine, expressed that people’s health needs have shifted amidst the pandemic. Health professionals have to consider how the pandemic tilted the equilibrium of healthcare systems across the world. This forum aims to improve the competence of the younger generation of health professionals, so that they could meet the dynamic changes in healthcare. “In unity, we ‘Prosper Mutually.’” Yan-Shen Shan believes that through collaboration, people can find ways to combat the pandemic and overcome the challenges together. The forum presented faculty and students a chance to expand integrative perspective and to consider ways to improve nursing education.

Nai-Ying Monica Ko, Director of the NCKU Department of Nursing and President of APANE Board of Directors, said that this international forum reflects the initial goal of APANE, providing an international platform for global partnerships and collaboration among nurse educators. This forum offers an opportunity for nurse educators to discuss the issues in the post-pandemic era. As a member of NCKU and the APANE, Ko expressed her wishes that the Asian-Pacific countries can overcome the differences in geological borders and educational qualities and boost transnational collaborations and interactions.

The forum is divided into morning and afternoon sessions. The Nursing Knowledge in Action: Exchange of Experience in Teaching Strategy of Evidence-Based Health Care Transnational Workshop in the morning session featured keynote speeches by Professor Pei-Fan Wu of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Professor Ying-Ju Chang of NCKU, Assistant Professor Edmond P.H. Choi of the University of Hong Kong, and Assistant Professor Togoobaatar Ganchimeg of the University of Tsukuba, who shared how their institutes design and promote evidence-based educational courses for the undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. programs in nursing.

With the topic the Evolution of Nursing Education during COVID-19: Voices Sharing across Countries, the afternoon session started off with nursing students from Taiwan, Turkey, and Thailand sharing their personal learning experience during the pandemic, followed by nursing lecturers from Indonesia, Taiwan, and Turkey sharing techniques in course designing. Professor Paul Crawford from the University of Nottingham then gave his insights in the talk Restrictions and Lockdowns during COVID-19: Implications to Society and the Nursing Curricula. Scholars from Taiwan, the U.K., Australia, Indonesia, Turkey, and Thailand exchanged their ideas and experiences at the end of the event.

Scholars exchanged their ideas and experiences in the online forum

The global threat brought about by COVID-19 hinders the possibility for scholars to connect in person. Nevertheless, collaborations between transnational partners continue on in the form of online exchanges. The cross-border online forum demonstrates the influence of international nursing education. The forum, held in full English, was live-streamed on YouTube. With over a thousand registrations and around 800 real-time participants raising questions and joining discussions online, the forum is open to share its experiences with the world.
